AUSTIN BASED SINGER/SONGWRITER MOZWORTH TO DROP DEBUT SINGLE

“POSTCARD” IS OUT SEPTEMBER 12, 2024

Michael “Boz” Bosworth, musically known as Mozworth, will be a new name for most, but his musical roots and depth take listeners through familiar and relatable topics. As a product of the 90’s growing up in the small town of Logan, Iowa, Boz gravitated towards the subculture of skateboarding and a diverse musical palette filled with Silverchair, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Wilco, Thrice, and Jimmy Hendrix to name a few artists in his rotation.

“Postcard” is the debut release from Mozworth and the first single from his upcoming album. Boz was inspired by Bill Gates’s “Think Weeks” where he gets away to a secluded cabin and just reads. Boz took the idea, but evolved it into songwriting sessions, where he was able to get away from the demands of his day job and unwind from family life in a dedicated and isolated space. “Postcard” was written during his second “Think Week” session in a cabin located in McLouth, Kansas.

Boz elaborates, “McLouth, Kansas is about a 4 hour drive from where I was living and I listened to a ton of music on the way there to get inspired. This was a small DIY cabin across the river from a tiny home that belonged to the property owner, where a couple of ponies would run loose and sometimes come up to the cabin.” He adds, “ This is where I wrote ‘Postcard,’ which was originally titled ‘Here In Kansas.’ It’s a love song expressing my desire for my wife to share the experience I was having. The cabin only had a wood stove to keep it warm and I fell in love with keeping the fire going. A lot of this imagery comes out in the song. While I wrote other songs while I was in McLouth, none of them had the feeling I was looking for and ‘Postcard’ is the only one that took on a life of its own.”

Enter Austin, TX. In the Summer of 2022, Boz and his family moved to the “Live Music Capital of the World,” not knowing anyone, except for the reputation for it being a vibrant music city. Boz’s daughter had a friend whose dad was an avid skateboarder and also in the music industry. Both elements tied back to his youth and re-inspired Boz to revisit his Cabin recordings. Boz was instantly inspired by the creative community in Austin and was drawn in through KUTX and the countless concerts he was able to attend any night of the week.

To bring his recordings to full realization, he enlisted his good friend Jeff Shinrock to act as a producer and help him get the songs ready for recording. Boz explains, “I had worked with Jeff in several prior jobs in the tech industry and knew that he was a musician and had sampled some of the music he had recorded in his own studio. As we spoke about it I knew he was the right addition. We had a great mix of trust and rapport about music and he gave great constructive criticism.” Boz adds, “Jeff’s first round of feedback was that the songs did feel cohesive, but still felt like something was missing. That something had a lot to do with the overall energy of the songs.”

The missing piece came with a serendipitous encounter with local Austin drummer Ken Mockler, who was supposed to be part of a punk cover band that Boz was also invited to. When the other half of the players never showed, Ken and Boz hit it off instantly and Ken had the ingredient that his songs were missing – the drums! Boz states, “I had very little percussion in my demos. I didn’t have a full drum kit so I supplemented it with cajon, hand claps, and shakers or tambourines. Ken was really skilled as a drummer and it brought new energy.” The energy that was missing on the original demo recordings.

To balance things out, Boz flew out his dear friend Ashleigh Wright from Iowa to provide her female vocals on the project. Boz states, “In the end, the result was more than what I had hoped for. My favorite male female duo in a rock band is the Pixies and our finals had the kind of Pixies vibe that was perfect.”

“Postcard” is just the first example of Mozworth’s sound that takes inspiration from the freedom of skateboarding culture combined with 90s angst and energy through a lens of well-crafted introspective lyrics. Watch for more Mozworth singles coming, leading up to his debut album.

“Postcard” is due out September 12th and will be available everywhere you stream music. Pre-save the new song here.
