BASSEL & THE SUPERNATURALS TO RELEASE NEW SINGLE “ALEPPO”

“ALEPPO” DROPS JANUARY 17TH FROM THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM SMOKE & MIRRORS

Chicago, IL – Bassel & The Supernaturals recently inked a digital distribution deal with Six Degrees Records and are proud to release their first single through this new partnership. “Aleppo” is the third single from the band’s upcoming album Smoke & Mirrors, and celebrates the heritage of the oldest continuously civilized city on Earth. Bassel Almadani is a first generation Syrian-American who uses soulful melodies, funk inspired grooves, and captivating lyrics to help shine light on humanitarian issues and the modern day challenges facing Syrians across the world. The stunning artwork is a throwback photo of Bassel’s mother and her friend at the Saint Simon Citadel near Aleppo in the mid-1970s. The song drops on January 17th with a Chicago show that night at Thalia Hall, supporting the Rebirth Brass Band. More details at https://www.thaliahallchicago.com.

“Aleppo” is a disco & funk inspired track celebrating the city featuring Arabian vocalist Ashkur and marks Bassel’s debut singing in Arabic. He states, “The Western perception of Syrian & Arab cultures is too often associated with chaos. We are changing the narrative by highlighting the historical resilience and sustainability of our people.”

The song takes a lot of inspiration from Bassel’s workshops focusing on building sustainability through the arts. Most recently Bassel and his wife partnered with the Karam Foundation to lead workshops at the Karam House, a community innovation center in Istanbul, Turkey designed for Syrian refugee youth. Upon returning to Chicago, Bassel began a weeklong residency through the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) as part of their Sacred Cypher Creatives program: a year-long fellowship including an Artist & Community Residency and Annual Retreat for artists working at the intersection of culture, social justice, and community.

Bassel reflects, “Both of these experiences were profound. Every day we are striving to break down walls and build empathy, so to connect with aspiring artists near & far on achieving sustainability through their creative work was truly empowering. ‘Aleppo’ highlights the historical resilience and sustainability of the Syrian people, so to lead workshops empowering the next generation of Syrians was an experience that I will never forget.”

In addition to a digital distribution deal with Six Degrees Records, Bassel & The Supernaturals have also partnered with ArcArtists for booking. Bassel enthusiastically adds, “We’ve played over 300 shows since 2016 at festivals, performance halls, concert series, and clubs around North America. Many of our events include an educational component – including workshops, speaker/Q&A engagements, and other community events. ArcArtists specializes in booking multi-faceted events with arts presenters across the world, and we’ve already seen a lot of meaningful results through the relationship.”

The previous two singles from the album Smoke & Mirrors have already made waves in 2019. “Calculated Love” received critical praise, while “Stepping Back in Time,” was placed on Spotify’s ‘All Funked Up’ playlist and surpassed 175,000 plays. Bassel concludes, “The album, Smoke & Mirrors, is an exploration of what lies behind the curtain – the isolation, mental health issues, financial challenges, and the overall grind in pursuing a life in the arts. Too many artists are left to navigate it on their own rather than build with their community, so I’ve been truly grateful for the opportunity to uplift mine.”

Preorders for Smoke & Mirrors begin in March 2020. 20% of their album preorders will be donated to Karam Foundation to build a better future for Syria.
